No New Posts Hardboiled Heroes
A term invented by Dashiell Hammett, the "hardboiled detective" was further developed by Raymond Chandler, James Hadley Chase and Mickey Spillane. He is still around today in the writings of Elmore Leonard and even Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar (and is even more hardboiled sidekick "Win"). There are even hardboiled WOMEN investigators - God help us!

Whether it's Ed McBain's "87th Precinct," Georges Simenon's "Inspector Maigret" or John Creasey's "Inspector West" and "Gideon of the Yard" - the police procedural is a staple of those who thrive on the detective diet and a perenniel genre in the fertile fields of mystery fiction.

No, not the proverbial "fictio juris" that keeps the wheels of the system going when reality threatens to grind them to a halt - I mean those wonderful courtroom, jury-room and law firm mysteries given to us by Erle Stanley Gardner, Scott Turow, John Grisham, Brad Melzer and David Kessler.

Starting with Edgar Allan Poe and Wilkie Collins, progressing through Arthur Conan-Doyle, Agatha Christie and John Buchan you still can't beat the good old classic detective story - or can you? Here's where we can debate the issue(s)... or just sing the praises of those pioneering works that launched a new style of fiction.

The feminists would scream (if that wasn't such a girlie reaction) but for many young women in dead-end jobs, the dream of being saved from drudgery by some latterday Prince Charming is still the best hope of upward mobility - discuss! (Hate mail welcome.)

She's beautiful but bored with her comfortable, safe life back in Wembey Park. He's tall, dark, handsome and mysterious - the complete opposite of Kenny, whose idea of excitement is a fast-ride to Brighton on his moped. No wonder she finds this Mediterranean hunk so exciting. But is it really just booze and backy that he's smuggling? And who were those creepy men with guns? And what was really in those crates that he said contained nothing but water melons?
